Festive Activity Countdown

2 Dec 2024

With the build up to Christmas and the holidays in full swing, we've picked out some of our favourite wintry Family Maths Toolkit activities to share with you.

Each week we'll be adding another activity to this page so be sure to grab them to use with your kids. And don't forget that adults can also have some festive fun with our December Prize Draw on the National Numeracy Challenge

Week 1 - Make a Snowflake

This is a great activity to try at the start of December so that your children can make decorations for the festive season. As well as being lovely to look at, and fun to do, this activity can be a secret lesson in symmetry and fractions.

Week 2 - Christmas Elves

Three elves want to swap items of clothing for as many days as they can whilst making different combinations.

This activity uses a fun visual story to help children to think about all the possibilities and develops problem solving skills.

Week 3 - Secret Christmas Tree

This activity helps practice using mathematical language to describe something.

You'll have to decorate your own tree based entirely on your child's description of theirs, then see if they match.

There's lots of scope for funny mistakes in this one, which is great because that's the best way to learn!

Week 4 - Plan a Party

What focuses the mind better on numbers than when you're planning fun ways to spend a budget?

It might be tempting to spend it all on sweets but imagining that this is a real party helps develop practical planning skills too.
